CHARLI
BRIEF
Design a child size CPR manikin for children to learn CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) technique. The design must:
Facilitate tangible interactions design principles.
House electronics that support haptic feedback to facilitate children’s learning.
Demonstrate local manufacturing and sustainable approach.
Must emulate and provide feedback on CPR technique including (compression rate, depth and head tilt) to support learning and build muscle memory.
DESIGN SOLUTION
Informed by research and designed in collaboration with industry, CHARLI is a highly interactive and engaging child size CPR Manikin design for children to learn CRP technique in schools. Cost effective manufacturing, easily interpreted feedback and ease of maintenance are some the key elements of the design. CHARLI provides feedbacks on compression rate, depth and head tilt.

BACKGROUND
The purpose of this project was to understand the needs of target users, how 10-13 years old children (primary user) learn and identify appropriate interactions to support and enhance CPR training.
RESEARCH
Primary and secondary research were undertaken. Primary research included interviews with experts and secondary research included market research, user research, CPR technique, manufacturing, materials and tangible interactions.
PROBLEMS & OPPORTUNITIES
The main problems and opportunities found in the research include; (i) reduced amount of information (aids children learning), (ii) high fidelity manikin (aids knowledge transfer), (iii) facilitate CPR trainer feedback and (iv) cleaning and maintenance.
DESIGN SOLUTION
CHARLI is a 10 years-old sized CPR manikin designed for 10 to 13 years-old children in Queensland school settings. Design focuses on compression technique to help develop muscle memory. CHARLI’s interactions are highly visual and they are designed to be easily interpreted by children to aid CPR technique learning.
DESIGN SOLUTION
CHARLI CPR MANIKIN
A highly interactive and engaging child size CPR Manikin design for children to learn CRP technique in schools. Cost effective manufacturing, easily interpreted feedback and ease of maintenance are some the key elements of the design. CHARLI provides feedbacks on compression rate, depth and head tilt.

FEATURES & FUNCTIONS
This high fidelity design incorporates anatomical markings, human skin tone and natural movement for head tilt, all designed to aid knowledge transfer. CHARLI incorporates easily interpreted visual feedbacks that appear on the head and neck of the manikin for compression depth and rate feedback.
